In honor of National Women in Construction Week 2023, we are highlighting the variety of roles at Moriarty from the perspective of our women employees. This spotlight is on Project Management:
“My name is Kendall Sangster, and I’m a Project Engineer working on the 350 Boylston St. project in Massachusetts. I have worked in construction for 5 years and at Moriarty for 1 year. My day-to-day varies widely, but most often includes managing the project budget, working on product submittals and requests for information from our subcontractors, and communicating with owners and architects for problem solving. On a weekly basis, I walk the site with one of our superintendents to stay informed and to keep a pulse on the progression of the project. Staying informed of the project financials and schedule in tandem with observing on-site progression helps with managing the project budget. Being early on in my career, I also get exposure in the field to site activities that I haven’t seen before. Currently, we have a full slurry operation commencing on site. Recently, I watched the digging, forming, and pouring of our first slurry panel. Notably, and fitting for WIC week, the two operators working the crane and clamshell (and their apprentices) were all women! My advice for someone looking to work in construction project management would be to surround yourself with people who are currently doing the role that you’re interested in, and ask lots of questions. Ask for ways to get involved in areas of the projects that you’re interested in learning about, and don’t get discouraged or give up. Even though I’ve been in the industry for 5 years, I still learn something new almost daily, and I hear the same sentiment from my teammates who have 20+ years of experience.”
